Yes, all of our services are really free. You will never be asked to input your credit card information or billed for any services. There is no catch.
The majority of our services are free forever, this includes:
- Web Hosting (through TierraNet)
- Web Builder & Hosting (through Doodlekit)
- Search Engine Optimization Consulting
- Social Ventures Consulting
- Volunteer Web Design
- Volunteer Graphic Design
- Language Translation (through WorldLingo)
Two of our services are free only for a one-year period. In both cases, you are not required to renew the services (and don't need to worry that if you forget to cancel you will be billed).
- Phone.com Virtual Office: Free for one year. After that, if you decide to renew it is at a 50% discount for the second year and reverts to market pricing for the third.
- Domain Registration: Free for one year. After that, if you decide to renew with Moniker (the partner that provides the free year), the cost is $8.06 per year.
Your organization's domain name is it's address on the internet. Our domain name is "grassroots.org." Your organization's domain name should relate to your organization's name, but it need not be the same thing. As a rule, a name should be easy to remember, and not too long.
For example, if your organization's name is Doris B. Rosenthal Memorial Community Center you might chose dbrcommunitycenter.org or rosenthalcommunitycenter.org rather than the full dorisbrosenthalmemorialcommunitycenter.org.
As you can probably imagine, many of common domain names--and even some not-so-common ones--are already in use. Check out our domain registration guide for info on how to find out if a domain is already owned by someone else.
Unfortunately due to policy restrictions, at this time we are only able to offer services to organizations that are registered as 501c3 nonprofits in the U.S. or Registered Charities in Canada. This is dictated by our policies (see http://www.grassroots.org/services/terms).
We invite you to visit http://interconnection.org. They offer a similar service to international organizations.
First of all, congratulations in your decision to start a nonprofit organization. Our policy allows us to provide organizations with services after they have submitted their application for 501c3 status. If you have completed your 501c3 application, but have not yet received a response from the IRS, simply submit a copy of your 1023 form in place of your 501c3 letter.
If you have not yet filed your application, unfortunately at this time your organization is ineligible for Grassroots.org membership. If you are interested in becoming a 501c3 and would like information and resources on how to become one, we invite you to check out these resources:

Our domain registration service is free only for the first year. After that, you can transfer to any provider. We encourage clients to stay with Moniker simply because it is easy. The cost to renew a domain name is $8.02.
In order to renew your domain name with Moniker, please contact them directly at 1-800-688-6311.
For all questions related to Tierranet (your hosting is through Tierranet if you login at control.grassroots.org/login) please contact Tierranet directly.
They can be contacted by phone 24/7: (877) TIERRA-1 (843-7721).
First, your organization must decide if you want Doodlekit (our web builder) or a custom-designed site.
We usually recommend that organizations go with Doodlekit for a few reasons:
- You can literally have a website up in seconds (waiting for a volunteer can take several months)
- You can update your own content (even if you don't know any html
- You have access to cool tools like an image uploader, analytics plugin, and more
- You can chose from a variety of themes, or create a custom theme yourself
- You can get a volunteer to help you maximize your Doodlekit site if you like
To get started building a Doodlekit site, visit our Doodlekit help page and watch the Doodlekit webinar
To opt for a custom-designed site, visit our volunteer web design guide.
